San Diego Child Custody

What are the Different Types of Child Custody?
By California Family Law Attorney on October 21, 2009

In California, the term “child custody” covers multiple types of custody. Generally child custody refers to the care, control, and maintenance of a minor child when the parents are divorcing or separating. If you or a loved one are currently involved in a child custody case, it is important to understand the different types of custody you could be awarded. Here are a few types of child custody:

  • Physical Custody – Custody given to the person with whom the child will reside.
  • Legal Custody – This type of custody is given to those who will be making decisions on things like the education, upbringing, and health care of the child.
  • Sole custody – If you are awarded sole legal or physical custody, this means that you are the only person who has the decision making responsibilities for the child (legal custody) or that you are the only person with whom the child resides (physical custody).
  • Joint custody – Joint custody involves the sharing of either legal or physical custody between two parents.

There are multiple other terms associated with child custody that you need to become familiar with if you are going through a child custody dispute. An experienced San Diego child custody attorney can help you understand the different types of child custody available to you and help you resolve your child custody case.
