There are many reasons for the name change of a child, including a family name being added or dropped for the minor child, or to facilitate an easier spelling of the name for the minor child as he grows up, or simply just to change the name.

A person can seek to change their name or their child’s name in California. To begin with, a petition must be filed with the court in the appropriate jurisdiction-county of residence in order to seek a name change for their minor child. Additionally, the other parent will also have to be served with the petition seeking a name change of the minor child and any objections will be dealt with by the court.

Once the proper forms are filed with the court, a court date will be set. The petitioner must then publish the motion in a newspaper of general circulation one day of the week for four weeks in a row. It is a good idea to check with the court to make sure that the newspaper chosen is among the papers the court acknowledges as having a general circulation.

The petitioner will have to pay for the publication and provide proof to the court and copies of the publication.

When the court date arrives, the petitioner must show the court the proof of publishing such as an invoice or copies of the printed ad in the paper. Once the court is satisfied with all requirements being met, the order of name change will be signed by the judge and certified copies will be made available.
