What do I do when I am placed on the Child Abuse Central Index (CACI) list?

Monday, October 10th, 2011

In March 2008 and forward, individuals placed on the Child Abuse Central Index (CACI), had to be provided notice of their CACI listing as well as their right to appeal their name being placed on the list. The reporting agency, more commonly the county department of child social services, must send the individual a notice of his/her listing on the list and the proper procedures in requesting and challenging their names being on the CACI list.

A person who has received notice that their name was being placed on the list needs to act immediately and request a grievance hearing. If a person fails to request the hearing or just ignores it, it will most likely be more difficult to remove the name from the list but not insurmountable.

This is why it is equally important to contact an experienced Southern California family law attorney for representation in defense of the CACI listing.

What happens if your name was placed on the list before 2008?

You likely would not have received notice to this effect because it wasn’t required of the agency at the time. All is not lost however, as a person may still request a grievance hearing despite their name being listed prior to 2008. It is imperative that once the person has found out that he/she was placed on the list, a hearing request must be made within 30 days of being made aware that your name was placed on the CACI list.
