Being divorce attorneys in Southern California, we hear just about everything when it comes to a couple splitting up. But one man in Washington might be getting two divorces in a matter of days after the stunt he tried to pull off. He might also wind up in jail.
The whole escapade started when a Washington woman noticed that Facebook kept suggesting that she might know someone and suggested them as a friend. This is a popular feature on the social networking website that links people who have common friends. In this instance, the common friend was the woman’s estranged husband who had moved out in 2009.
After clicking on the link for the suggested friend, the woman found wedding pictures of her estranged husband and the second woman on the second woman’s Facebook profile. A quick call to her mother-in-law began to unravel the mystery.
Apparently after leaving his first wife, the husband never filed for divorce. After a couple of years, he filed for a legal name change and a month later “re-married”. The problem was, he was still legally married to his first wife. That is bigamy, and is against the law.
There apparently is some history between the two wives as well. Wife #1 was arrested in 2010 following an altercation with the woman who would eventually become Wife #2. This story is clearly better than any soap opera.
Our advice to you: if you’ve left your significant other and plan to re-marry, hire a family law firm to handle your divorce from your first spouse before you walk down the aisle a second time.
