What are some types of joint child custody schedules?

In a child custody case, joint custody is usually the preferred method of sharing child custody. San Bernardino family courts, as well as most Southern California courts, will always have the “best interest interest of the child” in mind when determining child custody. Studies have shown that joint custody is better for a child’s mental and physical health.

However, working out a child custody arrangement isn’t as simple as agreeing to joint custody. There are many different ways to split custody with your child’s other parent, and you will want to come to an agreement on a schedule with the child. This will create stability for your child, and provide a court-ordered arrangement that both parents must stick with.

If you wish to share joint custody of your child, your San Bernardino child custody attorney can help you work out a schedule for sharing custody. Some examples of a joint custody arrangement include the following schedules:

6 Equal Joint Child Custody Schedules

The Alternating Weeks Schedule

The alternating weeks schedule arrangement is a 50/50 parenting schedule where one parent cares for the children for one full week. After that, the other parent cares for the children the following full week. The parents continue to alternate every week. Many times, the exchanges take place on Sundays. This is also known as a week-to-week schedule.

3-4-4-3 Custody Schedule

The 3-4-4-3 custody schedule involves a parent caring for the children from Wednesday through Friday during the first week and Wednesday through Saturday during the second week. The child would be in the care of the other parent from Saturday through Tuesday during the first week and Sunday through Tuesday during week two.

5-2-2-5 Custody Schedule

The 5-2-2-5 schedule for child custody applies when a parent cares for the children on Monday and Tuesday and the other parent cares for the children Wednesday and Thursday each week. The weekends (from Friday through Sunday in this custody arrangement) would then be alternated between the two parents, resulting in a 5-2-2-5 schedule for each parent.

In other words, child custody is completely divided equally during the weekdays and the weekends are then alternated between parents.
