In an attempt to cut down on the amount of unpaid child support, California, along with many other states allow for interest to be added to delinquent child support accounts. Anytime a child support payment is not made, or not made in full, the other side is entitled to ask that interest accrue and be added to the total amount owed.
In the current economic state, many people who are delinquent on child support, are delinquent because they do not have the ability to pay. The result becomes that the amount owed steadily increases, and the debtor finds themselves in a financial hole that keeps getting bigger as time passes.
An experienced family law attorney can help to reduce the amount owed on child support, and work to stop interest from accruing. In many circumstances, a reduced balanced may be negotiated. Additionally, if there has been a change in the financial circumstances on either party, the child support obligation may be modified.
