A recent article on examiner.com discusses the trend of cyber affairs in marriages. With social networking technology booming, more and more individuals are taking to the internet to partake in cyber affairs, cyber cheating, online affairs, internet affairs, and internet infidelity. According to the article, the internet now ties with the workplace as the leading place for cheaters of both sexes to find willing partners with whom to have extramarital affairs.

The article goes on to discuss whether or not cyber affairs actually constitute “real cheating.” The argument goes that, at least at the outset, no sex is involved. However, even though there is no initial physical contact, online affairs are actually a form of emotional infidelity. They may start out in cyberspace, but many of them progress from e-mail to telephone calls to personal contact.

The article sites statistics from recent infidelity studies which indicate a strong correlation between internet affairs and sexual affairs, specifically, the article states that:

  • According to statistics, 50% of people who engage in internet chats have made phone contact with someone they chatted with online.
  • One study found that 30% of cyber-affairs escalate from e-mail to telephone calls to personal contact.
  • Another study found that 31% of people had an online conversation which eventually led to real-time sex.

Divorce can be the end result of marital infidelity. In many instances, there are other contributing factors to a couple’s unhappiness that manifest themselves in infidelity. Things like lack of communication, financial problems, and lack of intimacy can all be reasons that married couples seek the comfort of another’s arms.
