A recent story asks the question of whether or not the economy is affecting divorce rates in the country. The answer appears to be – yes. Across the nation, divorces are down, according to the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers. It seems that when times are rough, more couples choose to tough it out. Not so much for love, but for money.

The article goes on to explain that with more and more couples trying to work out their differences instead of choosing divorce, business for marriage counselors is booming.

“A lot of people have insurance, and that helps cover it,” says clinical psychologist Chuck Gray, who counsels couples in crisis. “For those who take insurance, they’re experiencing a dramatic increase.”

While the economy has decreased the amount of divorces, some couples find their relationships unsalvageable and have little choice but to divorce for their own (and very often their family’s) well-being. Lest we forget that money issues have long been known as a marital stressor.
