Statistics show that nearly 50% of marriages end in divorce. Southern California divorce attorneys seem to be particularly busy, thanks in large part to the Hollywood influence. Several high profile couples have called it quits in recent weeks, the most notable being pop star Katy Perry and comedian/actor Russell Brand.
Oftentimes public divorces tend to be contentious affairs, but this Hollywood power couple seems to have come to an amicable agreement. Despite not having a prenuptial agreement, the couple has managed to arrive at a divorce settlement relatively quickly that was filed in court this week. Brand and Perry don’t have any children together, helping move things along.
Hollywood couple or not, it is rare, especially in California, for divorcing parties to reach a settlement outside of court. California is a no fault state, which means all assets get split down the middle. This is why Kobe Bryant’s well publicized divorce is reportedly going to cost him upwards of $75 million.
In the settlement, Brand will not seek any spousal support from Perry, and Perry will restore her maiden name. The settlement also spells out a comprehensive division of property. It certainly helps that both Brand and Perry have successful careers of their own, and appear to still genuinely care for each other.
In accordance with California law, the divorce won’t become official until 6 months after the initial divorce filing, which Brand made on Dec. 30th. Perry and Brand were married in October of 2010 in India, meaning their marriage last just over a year.
