So, what can happen to me if I do not pay my child support? As family law attorneys, this is a very common question that we are asked to address very frequently. The answer, however, is not very pleasant, as there are several ramifications for not paying one’s child support obligations.
First, your driver’s license can be taken away for not paying your child support. This is a very common occurrence for cases where the County Child Support Office is involved. Next, you may not be able to travel outside of the USA for not paying your child support. Several countries will deny you access into their country if you are not current on your child support obligations and/or you could be denied the issuance of a passport.
Next, you could be sanctioned by the court or be held in contempt and charged criminally and incarcerated in some very extreme cases. Again, all just for not meeting your court-ordered, child support obligations!
These are just some examples of what can happen to you if you do not pay your child support. In a future blog, we will continue to address what else can happen to you for non-compliance.
