In a previous blog, we introduced you to some of the ramifications for not paying your court-ordered child support. We will now address probably the most important consequence: the financial impact it can have on you.

Basically, anything with your name and/or social security number attached it will be “attacked.” First, all bank accounts in your name will be levied, many times without your immediate knowledge. This includes checking accounts and any type of savings account you may have. Obviously, this can lead to huge headaches and other consequences such as the bouncing of checks!

Next, your wages will be garnished, as your employer will be sent a court order to withhold certain amounts of money from your pay check. Also, any retirement account that you may have will be levied. This includes accounts such as an IRA, 401k, etc.

We have gone over what can happen to you if you do not pay your child support. As you can see, it is very important to pay your child support and/or hire a very knowledgeable family attorney the second that you cannot, so as to avoid these consequences.
